Thermodynamics, similar to e.g. mechanics, materials science and design theory, belongs to the fundamentals of engineering sciences. Also called "general energy theory", technical thermodynamics teaches how to differentiate between and calculate various forms of energy. Since energy remains as a state quantity, processes can only take place by conversion of energy forms of appearance among each other. This possible transformation of energy of one form of appearance into another is controlled by the second central quantity of thermodynamics, entropy. Thus, in the typically basic lectures/modules, the focus is on enabling the balancing of energy and entropy, the description of energy converters, and the provision of thermophysical material data.
